A well-shot empty room stages beautifully; a dark, tilted, cluttered photo produces mediocre results no matter which tool you use. Here is exactly how to photograph empty rooms so your staging comes out clean, realistic, and MLS-ready.
Gear: Your Phone Is Enough
A modern smartphone camera produces excellent input for virtual staging. A dedicated camera with a wide-angle lens helps, but it is not required. What matters far more than the camera is how you use it:
- Shoot in landscape orientation. Listing sites, MLS layouts, and staging tools all favor horizontal images.
- Use the main lens, not the ultra-wide. Extreme wide-angle lenses distort walls and floors, which makes AI-placed furniture look warped. If you need more of the room, step back instead.
- Wipe the lens. A smudged phone lens is the most common cause of hazy listing photos.
Position: Chest Height, Camera Level
Where you stand and how you hold the camera has the biggest impact on staging quality:
- Shoot from chest height, roughly 4 to 5 feet off the ground. Eye-level shots make ceilings loom; low shots exaggerate floors.
- Keep the camera perfectly level. Tilted verticals make walls lean, and staged furniture placed on a tilted floor plane never looks right. Use your camera's grid and level indicators.
- Shoot from a corner or doorway to capture two or three walls. Showing multiple walls gives the AI the spatial context it needs to place furniture with correct depth and proportion.
- Capture the floor. Furniture stands on the floor, so the photo needs to show a good amount of it. Aim to have the floor fill roughly the bottom third of the frame.
Light: Natural, Even, and On
- Shoot during daylight, ideally mid-morning or mid-afternoon when light is bright but not harsh.
- Open every blind and curtain. Natural light makes rooms feel larger and gives staging tools accurate lighting to match. V-Stage's window preservation keeps those bright windows and views intact in the staged result.
- Turn on all the lights to fill shadows in corners and hallways, even during the day.
- Avoid shooting directly into a bright window. Angle slightly away so the room is exposed correctly rather than silhouetted.
Prep: Empty Means Empty
Virtual staging adds furniture, but it cannot cleanly remove what is already there. Before shooting:
- Remove boxes, cleaning supplies, ladders, and leftover items
- Take down loose cables, and clear window sills and counters
- Sweep or vacuum, since debris on floors shows up in photos
- Close closet doors and toilet lids
If a room still has some old furniture, either remove it before shooting or expect the staging to work around it. Clean, truly empty rooms produce the most realistic results.
